AVALON – With a one-time expense of just under $11,000, Avalon hopes to bring an end to a controversy that left four homeowners without proper home warranties and the borough’s Construction Official sanctioned by the state.
The controversy has its roots in modular home construction in the borough in 2011 and 2012. Four homes by one developer were not issued appropriate home warranties.
Following discovery of the deficient warranties in 2017, the builder’s license was revoked, complicating the problem of how to obtain proper warranties for the homeowners.
The borough petitioned the state for permission to purchase four warranties on behalf of the homeowners and received that permission in November 2018. After dealing with what Assistant Business Administrator James Waldron called state red tape, the governing body was able to vote the funds for the warranties at its May 29 meeting.
Waldron said each of the homeowners has indicated a willingness to participate in the program.
