CREST HAVEN – Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders welcomed Regent Willem Wandik and members of the Provincial Council of the Regency of Punkat, Papua, Indonesia Feb. 23 at the Freeholder Caucus meeting. The delegation from Indonesia is visiting Cape May County on business and were officially welcomed by the board with a presentation signed by all five freeholders.
Indonesia is comprised of 34 provinces, each province has its own political legislature and governor. The 34 provinces are divided into regencies and cities, Regent Willem and his provincial council members serve as the freeholder counterparts in Punkat, Papua, Indonesia.
On Monday, the delegation was welcomed at the Pen Turbo Aviation facility, located at the Cape May County Airport, by Freeholders Will Morey and Marie Hayes, as well as representatives of the Delaware River and Bay Authority. Regent Willem is in Cape May County conducting an inspection of the Regency’s recently acquired Turbo Caribou aircraft, produced by PEN Turbo Aviation.
“While my colleagues and I are always pleased to host foreign tourism within the county, the Regency’s purchase adds a special international dimension by benefiting the county’s year-round business climate through a trade transaction,” stated Freeholder Will Morey in a release, who has oversight for economic development in the county. “We wish the Regency the best in its use of the aircraft for its own economic development, as well as for humanitarian missions.”
Regent Willem and his delegation will spend a week interacting with government and Pen Turbo Aviation representatives. They spent Monday with technical representative of PEN Turbo Aviation conducting several demonstration and familiarization flights.
Freeholder E. Marie Hayes expressed her appreciation to Regent Willem and the entire delegation. “We are honored to receive Regent Willem and his esteemed colleagues to Cape May County. On behalf of the Board of Freeholders and the residents, I am delighted to welcome them to our beautiful county and experience all we have to offer,” Hayes said.
The Turbo Caribou is one of a limited number of aircraft suited to transport activities in the mountainous terrain and short landing fields of Punkat, Papua. The Punkat Regency relies on air transport to support its many remote districts as ground infrastructure for transport is limited. The aircraft will be utilized to provide direct service and humanitarian assistance.
PEN Turbo Aviation of Cape May has undertaken the program of re-engineering the DHC-4A Caribou to the turbine powered variant, now designated DHC-4A Turbo Caribou. The DHC-4A Caribou is a twin engine utility passenger-cargo aircraft capable of carrying loads of up to four tons for the legacy aircraft and in excess of five tons for the new Turbo powered variant. Its exceptional short takeoff and landing characteristics enable it to operate from jungle airstrips, beach heads and other restricted airfields normally accessible only to light aircraft.
