CREST HAVEN – Freeholders focused attention July 25 on the county’s attempt to revive Cape Educational COMPACT that provides “at risk” high school students with the opportunity to overcome challenges that stand in the way of their educational and social success.
Freeholder Will Morey explained that this alternative program seeks to provide students who are failing socially and academically with a structured program that can re-integrate them back into the traditional educational system to provide a pathway towards graduation.
Morey added that the current program has suffered from declining enrollment (about 20 are currently enrolled) and that the county feels “compelled to look at another path forward that is really important for our kids.”
Morey related that the county is in discussion with Camelot Education, which, according to their website, “is a national education leader serving the needs of alternative and special needs students.” Morey feels that success depends on getting kids involved at an earlier age than high school. He wants to see if Camelot Education has a program that can begin for students in the sixth or seventh grade.
Morey stated that the program is funded by the participating schools in the Special Services School District, although the county will provide some support to this program that he feels is key to the success of many at-risk children in the county.
Freeholders also passed resolutions that authorized the acceptance of a state Department of Labor and Workforce Innovation grant for $1.026 million, and another resolution that amends the 2017 budget in the amount of $725,078 to assist adults, youths and dislocated workers in finding employment.
A bond ordinance was introduced providing for various capital improvements like bridges, the airport, and technology acquisition in the amount of $17.302 million. A public hearing will be held on this ordinance Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. in the freeholders’ meeting room.
