CREST HAVEN – Cape May County freeholders took two historic actions April 12.
First, they authorized the county to join with the Cumberland-Salem Workforce Development Board, pending final state approval. That would end the link with Atlantic County’’s workforce investment board, long a source of contention by freeholders. They believed the county never received its fair share of funding from the entity.
Representatives from the Cumberland-Salem Workforce Development Board, Executive Director Allison Spinelli and consultant Dante Rieti, retired executive director of the entity, attended and addressed the board.
If all goes according to plan after a May 9 meeting with state officials, the county hopes to link with its two western partners by July 1 to form only the second such tri-county WIB in the state.
Second, they awarded a contract to build a new correctional center to Hall Construction Co., Inc. for $37.4 million. The process resulted from a rebid of the original call for proposals which brought in bids of $44 million. Present at the meeting to see the award was Sheriff Gary Schaffer and Warden Donald Lombardo.
Additionally, the board approved a resolution that amended the staffing limits at the Cape May County Prosecutor’’s Office for investigators to 47.
More details about these items coming soon.
