CREST HAVEN – Freeholders approved a resolution Dec. 8 that appointed three to permanent positions in the Sheriff’s Department at Correctional Center.
Charles Magill Jr. was named county correction captain. Russell Norcross and Amy Maguire were named county correction sergeants. All three were effective Nov. 13, 2015. The appointments were made following N.J. Civil Service Commission certification, which makes them permanent.
Library Tax
Freeholders established the 2016 county library tax at .00029 of a mil per dollar to be raised by taxation to maintain the County Library system. For the math-challenged, that is $29 per $100,000 of assessed value, about what a popular novel would cost. The rate has remained at that level for the past three years.
Only those municipalities that participate in the library system pay that tax. Avalon and Ocean City maintain their own libraries and thus are excluded from that tax.
Firearms-Driving Simulator
Freeholders approved the purchase and installation of a firearms-driving simulator at the Public Safety Training Center for $284,770. The unit will be provided by FAAC, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich.
Purchasing Agent Kevin Lare said the unit is a “state of the art, five-panel virtual driving and live fire training simulator.”
Public Safety Training Center and County Prosecutor are sharing the cost, with $60,000 from the Prosecutor’s Office coming from forfeiture funds. They are funds seized during drug arrests and other illegal activities.
Public Safety Agreements
Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness training instructors for the Fire Marshal’s Office and Department of Health from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015 were approved by the board Dec. 8. They included: Mike Eck, Gus Crist, Art Hayden, Bill bates, Robert Hanson, Harry Wozunk, James Sampson, Dale Gentek. The line item to pay them was not to exceed $15,360.
In a similar manner,  through 2016, ending Dec. 31, 2016, instructors for fire fighting training for the Fire Marshal’s Office were approved. That line item to pay was not to exceed $29,000.
Instructors approved: James Burleigh, Daniel Dunn, Arthur Hayden, Nancy McDevitt, Keith Nielsen, Daniel Speigel, William Cripps, Robert Feltwell, Matthew Johnson, Sean McDevitt, Lewis Ostrander, Richard Sweeten, William Dukes, Dale Gentek, Ronald Martinelli, William Mullligan, Christopher Parke.
