CREST HAVEN – Without comment, freeholders, Feb. 24, appointed Carl Groon, mayor of Wildwood Crest, to a five-year term as member of the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority. His term will expire Feb. 1, 2020. Groon will replace John J. Pantalone, a former Wildwood Crest mayor, who served many years on the MUA.
Groon and his wife, Donna, have three children, and two grandchildren. A successful local business owner for over 30 years, Groon is a former member of the Wildwood Crest Recreation Committee and was appointed to one term with the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement and Development Authority. He also served as president for five of the six years he was a member of the Wildwood Crest Board of Education, according to the borough website.
He volunteered time to coach the Optimist Little League team for eight years, served as a board member for the Greater Wildwood Little League and coached the Crest Memorial Elementary School junior varsity and varsity basketball teams.
In other action the board:
• Approved annual license agreement with SESAC, LLC, originally the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers, for $1,171 to allow the county “to have non-dramatic renditions of copyrighted musical compositions performed on county property” for this calendar year.
• Authorized professional service agreements for veterinary services Feb. 25 through Dec. 31, 2015 for county Animal Shelter and Adoption Center with Baysea Veterinary Hospital, South Paw Animal Hospital, Abri Animal Hospital, Shore Veterinarians and Cape Veterinary Hospital.
• Extended contract through April 14, 2015 with Smeltzer and Sons Inc. to furnish and deliver animal food for the Animal Shelter and K-9 Unit.
• Approved articulation agreements between Atlantic Cape Community College and the county to provide opportunity to students of county Police Academy and Corrections Academy to obtain college credit for competencies mastered at those academies.
• Approved five-year agreement with Iron Mountain Information Management LLC to store county microfilm records for the County Clerk’s Office from Feb. 25, 2015 until Feb. 24, 2020. The facility, located in a Pennsylvania mountain, provides security those records, which may be readily accessed if needed, according to Deputy Clerk Diana Hevener.
• Authorized a travel show agreement for 2015 between the county and Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities for $20,000 to represent the county’s tourism interests at 30 travel shows for $666 each.
• Awarded to South State Inc. a contract for $161,979 for short-term improvements of the intersection at Rio Grande Avenue (CR 661) and Susquehanna Avenue, Wildwood.
