COURT HOUSE – It’s not too late for Cape May County residents to get a flu shot. The Cape May County Department of Health will hold additional flu shot clinics this month. The clinics will be held at the Department of Health, located at 6 Moore Road (building 17) in Court House (Exit 11 off of the Garden State Parkway).
Free flu vaccinations will be offered on Thur., Dec. 23 from 2-4 p.m. and on Tues., Dec. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The flu clinics are available for everyone 6 months of age and older. As a reminder, children who are between 6 months and 5 years of age who attend a licensed daycare or preschool must receive a flu shot by the end of December to continue attendance in January. Children less than 9 years of age may need a booster dose one month after the first shot to be fully protected against the flu. Parents can call 609-465-1200 to find out if their child needs a booster dose.
For seniors, both the standard-dose and high-dose flu shots are available. The high-dose vaccine is a stronger version of the standard flu shot that produces a greater number of antibodies, which is what the body uses to fight off viruses. The standard-dose flu vaccine is available at no cost; the high-dose vaccine is available at no cost for seniors that have Medicare Part B as their primary payer. Seniors, who don’t have Medicare Part B as the primary payer but want the high-dose vaccine, can make a cash payment of $40. A receipt will be provided that can be submitted to their replacement/advantage plan for possible reimbursement.
For all flu clinics, persons with an allergy to eggs or latex or persons who have been told by a doctor that they have had Guillain-Barre syndrome need a prescription from their physician to receive a flu vaccine.
Clinics will be held on a first-come, first-served basis while vaccine is available. Call ahead to 609-463-6581 or check the website at cmchealth.net to confirm the clinics will be held. Information on the new flu vaccine for seniors can also be found on the department’s website.
