CREST HAVEN – What started as an advertisement last winter for those who wanted to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) has become a pilot program to transport workers from the mainland to jobs in Cape May and the Wildwoods.
The service, which began July 5 and will continue to Sept. 9, is being done through Cape May County Fare Free Transportation. The free service will, according to a release from the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, “help employees get to work from Lower and Middle townships to Cape May and The Wildwoods.”

At the June 26 freeholder meeting, Freeholder E. Marie Hayes, director of transportation, noted that the program had trained seven CDL drivers with four of them “coming to Fare Free Transportation for the summer for internships.”
Hayes added that the state had targeted the need in the county for training CDL drivers.
“Now we’re starting to see CDL wanted signs pop up,” she said.
“Hopefully, this program will explode, and we’ll keep it going. As long as they get that CDL, people will be employed. They will have a job,” Hayes said.
