Fortune Telling OK’d

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council lifted the blanket prohibition of fortune telling and other “crafty science” June 19.
Until that point, the municipal code embodied prohibitions that tracked state actions against fortune telling dating to the 18th century.
The new ordinance lifts the general prohibitions and substitutes for it a licensing process that regulates without prohibiting the activity. The ordinance subjects any fortune telling business to the usual approvals of the mercantile license process, adds a requirement for criminal background checks, and finally limits areas of the city where any such business might be located.
Issues of fraudulent or deceptive business practices will be dealt with through the appropriate state criminal statutes.
