Fortune Telling Ban Ends

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – New Jersey banned fortune telling in the 18th century. According to Cape May City Solicitor Frank Corrado, that ban lasted until 1979 when the state readopted its criminal code. In so doing, it eliminated the ban.
To bring city ordinances into compliance with state law, city council introduced an ordinance lifting the “flat ban” on fortune telling, and setting up regulations on what Corrado called “crafty sciences” performed for commercial purposes. These include the need for criminal background checks, certain disclosures of ownership, and restrictions on location.
The ordinance will be subject to a public hearing when it is considered for second reading and adoption.
