NORTH CAPE MAY – A handful of neighbors attended the June 3 Lower Township Council meeting to voice concerns about failed water pumps that caused home and auto damage along Roseann Avenue, Clearwater Drive, and Linda Ann Avenue.
A large project is underway there to alleviate flooding problems and is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
According to township engineer Mark Sray, the company doing the work, Abate Construction, is responsible for ensuring the three pumps on sight are constantly operational.
Neighbors said those pumps failed when a series of violent lightning and thunderstorms moved through the area overnight May 26 into early May 27.
Sray said Abate had a worker on site the morning of May 26, who restarted two of the pumps. The main pump had to be removed, disassembled and repaired.
Paul Ragan, who lives on Clearwater Drive, told council stormwater entered his home and damaged a floor he had just replaced and a car on his property was damaged. Other residents voiced similar complaints.
Lower Township Manager James Ridgway apologized and said the township was taking damage claims that would be submitted to Abate.
Roseann Avenue area residents have been complaining about flooded roads and properties since the mid-1980s.
The nearly $8-million dewatering project began in November 2018.
