COURT HOUSE – A 3-year-old collie named Flash Gordon received Middle Township’s Top Dog of 2015 award. Flash attended the Feb. 2 Middle Township Committee meeting with his guardians Nicole Del Corio and Josh Conlow.
Mayor Timothy Donohue presented the award which included a basket of goodies and treats. The award also carried with it Flash’s 2015 license. Flash will become the face of the 2015 Middle Township Animal Advisory Board.
Donohue explained that the contest was established to give people a fun reminder that their dogs need to be licensed and vaccinated. Chris Nagle, WIBG 94.3 FM radio personality, had the task of selecting the contest winner.
With pictures of finalists available through social media and the township website, listeners joined in to help Nagle select the winner. “Chris Nagle really had a challenge choosing one dog from the photos submitted,” Donohue said.
The contest had its serious purpose, to underscore the importance of keeping a dog’s rabies vaccination current and getting the license required by law. Donohue cited the benefits of a license.
If lost, a licensed dog does not require shelter intake and care. The dog is given a free ride home. That saves needed funds and allows the shelter to concentrate on its core mission.
The license also lets everyone know that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies. Part of the license fee even goes toward support of “free” rabies clinics.
For the first time this year, Middle Township residents can have their dogs licensed for three years provided the dog has a rabies vaccination good through December 2017. The hope is that Flash, with movie-star good looks will do more than remind people of television’s Lassie. His job is to remind them of the importance of the license and vaccination process.
