CREST HAVEN – The first group of drivers to participate in a county-sponsored training class for commercial driver licenses recently graduated, according to Freeholder E. Marie Hayes at the May 22 freeholder meeting. She announced that there were seven graduates who attained CDL accreditation. Of those, five will start driving this summer for the county’s Fare Free Transportation Department.
Hayes, department liaison, said those drivers would operate on a route to get offshore employees lacking transportation in the southern part of the county, from the mainland to jobs on the barrier islands. She expects to tell more at the next meeting.
On Feb. 7, an advertisement was placed in the Herald that announced the joint program between the county Department of Fare Free Transportation and the Technical High School.
It stated qualified students would receive classroom and practical instruction that would end in earning a state-standard, Class B CDL with passenger endorsement.
It also stated, “Successful candidates will be offered a paid part-time summer job with the Cape May County Fare Free Transportation Department, with the potential for full-time employment.”
The program was administered by the Technical School in conjunction with the Workforce Development Board Cumberland/Salem of which Cape May County is a member.
