FEMA Flood Insurance Program Extended to May 31

FEMA Flood Insurance Program Extended to May 31

By Vince Conti

WASHINGTON – While efforts stalled to avoid a partial government shutdown Dec. 21, one bill important to Cape May County got attention.
Senate Bill 3628 was passed in the House by a vote of 315 yeas, 48, nays and 69 not voting.
President Donald Trump signed the bill later that evening. Only one member of New Jersey’s House delegation voted against the extension, U.S. Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. of the 10th District.
While the bill does not deal with any of the reforms many feel the program needs, it extends the program as is until May 31, 2019.
Even a short lapse in the program could have disrupted real estate markets and left the Federal Emergency Management Agency without the borrowing capacity needed to pay claims.
