PETERSBURG – Upper Township Mayor Richard Palombo queried Engineer Paul Dietrich about a recent meeting with state Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regarding the township’s management of Strathmere beach.
“Since Whale Beach has not had any nesting birds for a while, we can move in a couple of additional lifeguard stands. The feral cats and fox that are on the beach will probably be trapped and moved. The rule is that they only be moved a certain amount of distance from the catch area,” explained Dietrich.
Upper Township Committee member Curtis Corson noted, “Red fox are not a native species and some animals, if sick, will be euthanized.”
Responding to the overall concept of trapping and removing these animals, Palombo emphasized, “We need to find out what specifically are they doing with these animals. People like to see a few fox on the beach and we need further discussion on this.”
