Eye Grant for School Renovation

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – At its Feb. 19 meeting, Cape May City Council authorized a grant application to the National Park Service Historic Revitalization Program. The grant seeks funds for the renovation of the Franklin Street School.
Responding to a question, Mayor Clarence Lear said the application was in line with the city’s agreement with the county concerning the potential relocation of the county library branch to the historic school from its Ocean Street site.
No final determination on the library relocation has been made, but Lear pointed out that the structural renovation of the old school would allow the city to repurpose the long-idle building in other ways if the library branch is not eventually located there.
