Ex-Firefighter, City Settle Suit

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council approved a settlement with former firefighter Timothy Gay Nov. 21. Gay will receive $125,000 and agreed to end litigation aimed at being reinstated to the fire department. The city will pay $57,000 of the settlement with the remaining $68,000 paid by the city’s insurance carrier.
In 2015 Gay claimed that a new hair policy for male firefighters was directed at him. He said he was a whistleblower concerning actions by ranking department members that were either illegal or in violation of the collective bargaining agreement.
Solicitor Frank Corrado said the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing on the city’s part. “This represents a decision by the city to put an end to further litigation and legal expense,” he said.
