STONE HARBOR – A new restaurant and entertainment venue was the subject of residents’ complaints at an otherwise short July 7 meeting of Stone Harbor Borough Council.
A group of residents presented a letter to borough council asking for help with the late-night noise emanating from a second-story Caribbean-style restaurant and bar above Harbor Square that advertises live music.
Residents said that the owner seemed cooperative but that late-night noise levels frequently required a call to the establishment by neighbors. “We should not have to do this each night,” one pleaded with the council.
Mayor Suzanne Walters asked the borough clerk to accept the letter and assigned the matter to the Administration and Finance Committee for investigation and resolution.
Poles, Wires ‘Step Back’
Another off-agenda item that received attention was the plan by Atlantic City Electric to run above ground wires along Second Avenue as part of a service upgrade.
Council member Joselyn Rich was the first to raise the issue saying that having new above-ground utility poles installed along the avenue is “a step back” and warning that the aesthetics of the project would come back as criticism for the council.
Joan Kramar, who chairs council’s Public Works Committee, said the alternative, underground wiring, was an option Atlantic City Electric considered too expensive and too difficult to maintain.
“We don’t have a choice,” Kramar said. Residents speaking during public comment urged council to review its authority in the matter.
“I believe you have the authority to say no overhead wiring and Atlantic City Electric will have to comply,” one urged.
In other business, the borough renewed liquor licenses for Fred’s Tavern, Harbor Liquors, and the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor. A similar renewal for The Reeds at Shelter Haven was on the agenda, but was removed at the meeting and not considered.
Council also approved the Aug. 5 Sand Sculpting Contest special event.
