SEA ISLE CITY – During public comment at the Aug. 13 Sea Isle City Council meeting, several citizens decried the lack of awareness among pedestrians when crossing streets.
“People are not crossing in the marked pedestrian crosswalks,” said homeowner Dave Cohan. “It’s a dangerous situation.”
Solicitor Paul Baldini clarified that “pedestrians do not have to cross a street within a designated or marked pedestrian crossing. Under state law, pedestrians can cross at any crosswalk, such as at the corner of a street where there is a depressed curb. They must use due caution at all times and make sure a vehicle has enough time and sightline to stop for them.”
Another resident noted that the municipality’s promenade is also dangerous for those biking or walking when people dart across the walkway. He suggested the city paint a stripe down the middle of the promenade to keep each side delineated.
