During Year’s Last Meeting, Board Appoints Vets, Awards Contracts

CREST HAVEN — At the final freeholder meeting of 2011, Tue., Dec. 27, the board took the following actions:
• Awarded a $1.9-million contract to South State, Inc. of Bridgeton for repaving of New Jersey Avenue, Wildwood from Cresse to Youngs avenues. South State was lowest of six bidders.
• Awarded a $103,000 contract for replacement windows at Crest haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to Gunton Corp. (doing business as Pella Window and Door Co.) of Norristown, Pa.
• Awarded a $2.3-million contract to Diehl Electric Co., Inc of Hammonton for traffic signal improvements on 34th Street, Ocean City and Rio Grande Avenue, Wildwood. The firm’s total base bid was lower of two responsible bidders.
• A one-year agreement was made with Jersey Cape Diagnostic Training and Opportunity Center for $57,330 to pick up recyclable materials for county offices beginning Jan. 1, 2012. The center is a sheltered workshop exempt from bidding under local contracts law. It was deemed the only qualified sheltered workshop in the area to provide employment for 85-90 persons.
• Following veterinarians were authorized for one year to provide services on an alternating schedule to the county Animal Shelter and Adoption Center: Abri Animal Hospital, Baysea Veterinarian Hospital, Cape Veterinary Hospital, Parkway Veterinary Hospital, Shore Veterinarians.
• Appointed for one year Dr. Matthew Schwert, a veterinarian, as “Vet of Record” for the county Animal Shelter and for the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit.
• Approved agreement with N.J. Transit Corp. for $434,056 for transportation services for senior citizens and disabled residents through Dec. 31, 2012.
• Authorized application to state Department of Law and Public Safety for a $20,755 grant for Stop Violence Against Women Act. The money will fund direct services on the municipal court level to victims of domestic violence.
• Entered a labor agreement with First Assistant Prosecutor J. David Meyer until Dec. 31, 2014.
• Authorized $400,000 lease agreement with the Board of Education of the county School for Special Services for one year from Jan. 1, 2012. The lease has been in effect for many years. It is for the land and buildings at the Crest Haven school campus.
• No passing zones were authorized in Court House on Dias Creek Road and Hand Avenue in the area of the Middle Township Bike Path, which crosses both county roads.
• Approved consolidation of telephone operations into Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, thereby making one telephone unit effective Jan. 1, 2012.
