COURT HOUSE – County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Executive County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Stepura announced a joint initiative on drug awareness, prevention, and drug safety in schools throughout Cape May County. This initiative involves the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, municipal police departments, and local school districts in the County and focuses on drug awareness and drug enforcement in our schools. On Feb. 5, 2014, a round table discussion was held during the monthly County School Superintendents Meeting, where members of the Prosecutor’s Office detailed a drug awareness presentation, “Pills to Heroin,” that is currently being presented to Middle School and High School students throughout the County. This presentation is designed to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse and the progressive transition of addiction from prescription pills to heroin, along with the signs of abuse, as well as prevention and intervention advice.
Members of the Prosecutor’s Office and the County School Superintendents also discussed random narcotics detection K9 sweeps throughout the County schools to deter students from bringing drugs into school. Chief Ken Super and Juvenile Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Hance stated at the meeting, that the drug epidemic in Cape May County, specifically heroin, is continuing to grow. With the assistance of local police and school administrators, we hope to bring the dangers associated with drug abuse to our children at a young age before they can get exposed to dangerous drugs. County law enforcement and school officials hope that by educating students and parents on drug awareness and enforcing random drug searches that the dangers of drug addiction will warn children at an earlier age to avoid drugs.
