DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township’s Committee met Feb. 28 and recognized the Girls Dennis Township Hawks basketball team for winning the 2017 Cape-Atlantic Junior High Athletic League Championship.
As members of the Atlantic Cape Junior High Athletic League, Dennis Township teams play against such rivals as Folsom, Somers Point, Brigantine, Ventnor, and Margate.
Handing out certificates to the players and coaches honoring their success Councilwoman Lisa Salimbene remarked what a notable and rare achievement it was to win the championship.
This was the second title in the team’s history since its first championship title in 2008. The team capped a 10-0 season and then garnered the league championship with a 31-25 win over Margate.
Girls’ team coach and fifth-grade teacher Jen Peabody addressed the team and council. “We have an amazing team this year with a great group of athletes who worked and played hard together. It was a pleasure to work with these girls and parents.”
Peabody had pointed out a very strong eighth-grade squad helped with both offense and defense. Eighth graders were Katie Herlihy (high scorer and point guard), Kelcie Morrow, Sydney King, Alexis Jamison and Morgan Kern.
In addition, seventh graders Kylie Graham and Roan Jacqueline contributed to the strong performance this season.
Free Seedlings
The Environmental Commission is preparing to distribute seedlings this spring.
The type of seedlings has yet to be determined, and plans are being made as to where and when the distribution would take place.
The commission is also working on an informational brochure listing the plants and trees species native to the area.
The Dennis Township Environmental Commission represents the public and its long-term interests as local environmental advocates.
Clean Communities Program
As part of the state Clean Communities statewide program, Dennis Township is awarded grant money annually to implement a litter abatement program that incorporates the elements of cleanup, enforcement, and education.
Much of this money is used for the pickup of litter along township roadways and public lands by volunteer groups such as the scouts, church, school or civic groups.
Clean Communities Grant guidelines allow contributions to these volunteer groups for community cleanup days or other authorized cleanups and they are limited to $500 per volunteer group per event, per location or roadway mile.
If any local group would like to participate in the program or if anyone knows of a township roadway or public property that could use a cleanup, email kim@dennistwp.org.
