DENNISVILLE – The Dennis Township Committee unanimously approved on first reading a bond ordinance at its May 9 meeting that authorized the purchase of various capital equipment of $135,000.
Committee member Lisa Salimbene said that the Friends of the Historic Museum would be meeting May 11 to “continue and expand on all the great work that’s been going on there. We’re really so proud of our museum and the important history that it portrays of our village.”
Volunteers Needed
Salimbene said that the group organizing this summer’s National Night Out in Dennis Township is looking for a band and volunteers to help with this event and other community programs.
FEMA Maps
Committee discussed the new FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) flood maps and the relevant ordinance. Township Engineer John Gibson suggested, and members agreed, that modifying the current regulation to reflect requirements that new construction builds two feet higher than what the FEMA mapping necessitates would be a good initiative.
This would be similar to other county communities. By doing so, the township can help residents lower insurance rates.
Committee approved a construction project which requires a temporary easement for the resurfacing of Corson Tavern Road, (County Road 628) from Tattler Road in Dennis to New Bridge Road in Upper Township.
Bees, Campground
During the public comment portion of the meeting, resident Robert Penrose, representing the township’ Environmental Commission, referred to a letter he sent to the committee about carpenter bees.
“We stand ready to help Dennis deal with the potentially dangerous situation of carpenter bees so please let me know how to proceed,” he said.
Resident Carolyn Donovan followed up on her previous pleas at prior meetings to the committee that something is done about the campground and what she termed “the illegal activity that is going on at that property.”
Donovan added, “I’ve had no response from code enforcement, and I’ve asked the solicitor to check who is responsible for inspecting the campground and whether their increased construction is legal.”
