Dennis to Amend Abandoned House Ordinance

DENNISVILLE – Changes to Dennis Township’s ordinance on abandoned homes was discussed by Township Committee July 11.
The proposed amendments prepared by Solicitor Marcus Karavan added greater flexibility to the ordinance ensuring that second-home owners would not get caught in the process as long as they maintain their properties in line with existing codes.
The alterations also exclude properties with a valid building permit where work is ongoing. It extends a number of the time frames in the original ordinance to give property owners more time to comply with the ordinance.
Lastly, the amendments provided for an appeal to the governing body within 30 days of a notice of violation of the ordinance.
The ordinance on “Property, Abandoned and Nuisance” was adopted in October 2016.

Karavan also advised the committee to move ahead with the signing of a preliminary agreement with Atlantic City Electric (ACE) concerning the township’s bike path agreement with the utility.
According to Karavan, changes desired by the municipality, specifically a request for an increase in the allowable path along with the attachment of engineer’s drawings, were not included in the preliminary agreement.
Karavan reported that similar items did eventually become part of ACE’s agreement with Middle Township. Given that, Karavan expects the township will prevail in getting the same items incorporated into its agreement with the utility.
The preliminary agreement will clearly state that “it does not contain the final terms between the parties.”
