DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee held its regularly scheduled meeting Nov. 15 with a number of members of the Dennisville Historic Home Owners Association (DHHOA) in attendance.
At the municipality’s Nov. 1 meeting attended by a large group of residents, including members of the association, a number of township residents expressed their concern about the “hooliganism” taking place within the township. At that meeting, citizens described in detail numerous acts of hooliganism and vandalism that have occurred throughout the township.
The alleged perpetrators, a group of boys, ages 7-14, “have inflicted property damage with their unsupervised behavior,” said one citizen. Several citizens indicated they have become fearful of this group and are concerned about the possibility of retaliation for reporting on them.
Just prior to the municipality’s committee meeting, Committee member Donald Tozer arranged a meeting between members of the DHHOA and officials from the Woodbine State Police Barracks to discuss a plan of action to eliminate these acts of hooliganism. Tozer reported that the takeaway from this meeting was to report it if you see acts of hooliganism and vandalism. Tozer went on, “folks should not be afraid to report any incidents of hooliganism and that no one should fear retaliation.”
The state police will investigate all reports they receive. Since the last meeting, the state police have gone to the offender’s houses and it was noted by Tozer that things have gotten better.
Other Business
In other business, several items on the consent agenda were approved including awarding a professional services contract to Pogue Safety & Health Consortium to coordinate alcohol and drug testing services for 2017 and approving the specifications and authorizing the advertisement for bid of the paving and striping of the parking areas at the Dennis Township Recreation Complex.
An ordinance updating the fees related to the use of the facilities of the Dennis Township Parks and Recreation Department was adopted. The committee pointed out that the fee schedule has not been amended since 1989 and that the changes to the fees are related to the use of facilities by individuals or groups from outside of the township.
Committee member Lisa Salimbene informed the committee that the 27th Historic Dennisville Christmas House Tour will take place Dec. 17 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Each year in December, a minimum of eight homeowners open their beautifully-decorated homes to the tour.
DHHOA is a nonprofit corporation organized to study the history of Dennisville and the surrounding area and to encourage the preservation of the historic homes in the village and in the township so that future generations will be able to view them and learn about the history of the area.
Originally accounting for 69 structures, the village of Dennisville is included as a historic district on both the national and state registers of historic places. Currently, the DHHOA is in the process of re-surveying the Dennisville Historic District and the areas immediately surrounding the existing district.
