DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee met Dec. 1. Committee member Donald Tozer announced that local resident Colt Dietrich will be returning to his home in Clermont this month from Iraq. To celebrate the occasion, the township will join with family members to organize a parade Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. Ocean View Volunteer Fire Department will support the parade and Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) will attend to present Dietrich with a proclamation.
Acts of Giving
Committee member Lisa Salimbene reported that township employees served over 75 participants at Dennis Senior Center’s annual Thanksgiving lunch. “Each year, and for many, many years, our employees shop, prepare, serve and clean up to make this day special for our seniors,” she said. “And sad to say, for many this will be the only Thanksgiving meal they will enjoy with others. So our township people really deserve kudos for their efforts each and every year.”
In a related initiative for the Thanksgiving holiday, Committee member Albert DiCicco said that he had delivered 200 food baskets to Woodbine residents on behalf of the township’s food bank. “At this time of year especially there are many families who are hurting economically, so it’s a good thing that we can do this and we are always accepting donations,” he said.
Active Shooter Drill
In a depressing sign of the times, DiCicco said he had participated in an “active shooter” drill organized by Upper Township with other county representatives and law enforcement officials. “It was more a table-top, play action kind of exercise,” he said. “However, after Sandy Hook and Virginia Tech, there seems to be a new strategy where a police officer, even if it’s just one on the scene, will aggressively go into the location and hunt down the shooter. That is what happened during the recent Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado, and the poor police officer lost his life.”
Collaboration with Campground Owners
DiCicco said he had met with members of the Campground Owners Association wearing his hat as a member of the township’s Environmental Commission. “Thanks to Don’s [Tozer] introduction, we had a very productive meeting, lots of brainstorming on issues related to the environment and how they can support us on those,” he said. “The township’s campgrounds are a great economic factor for Dennis, so this is a good marriage.”
