DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee voted unanimously July 21 to approve upon second reading Ordinance 2015-05. That authorized completion of various capital improvements and appropriated $1.39 million in bonds. The ordinance is on file at the Office of the Clerk.
The ordinance lists a number of purposes and/or improvements that the funding will cover. These include acquisition of a rescue squad vehicle; acquisition of various capital equipment for the Public Works Department such as a dump truck, heavy-duty forklift and heavy-duty equipment lift; reconstruction of Academy and Fidler roads as well as repaving of other township roads; structural improvements to the municipal building and Senior Center; and improvements to various recreation complexes in Dennis.
During the public hearing portion of the meeting related to the ordinance, a resident asked “Does this ordinance mean a tax increase and will this money be spent all in one shot?”
In response Mayor John Murphy replied, “No, not really. This is not a tax increase, this capital spending is actually a plan spread out over five to 10 years as we have done in the past, and it will take time to expend the funds to do all the projects and purchase the equipment contained in the ordinance.”
Board of Health Concerns
Preceding the regular meeting, committee considered various items related to health. It was reported that there have been 565 dog licenses issued to date in 2015. That is a slight decrease from last year.
There was no notice of confinement of domestic animals with known or suspected exposure to rabies and no suspected hazardous substance discharge notification for the first six months of 2015.
Water Conservation
At noon Aug. 26 at the Senior Center, there will be a lunch with a featured speaker from the American Littoral Society.
“She is a really excellent speaker and expert in the field,” said Committee member Lisa Salimbene, event organizer. “Since water conservation is so important to our township as a rural community, and especially with other water supplies and resources threatened such as the Cohansey aquifer and that we are sitting on top of a huge aquifer of the Pine Barrens, this is a great initiative from the perspective of the Dennis Environmental Commission,” echoed Committee member Albert DiCicco.
Historical Trivia Contest Winner
Salimbene announced that Hannah Shaw-Wright was winner of the township’s historical trivia contest which was open to all fifth graders. Shaw-Wright won the contest by answering the final deciding question, “What is the oldest house in the Village of Dennisville?”
She knew the correct answer; it is the David and Sarah Johnson House, which is the green house across from Dennis Fire Department on Petersburg Road.
“The contest was really a great success, it’s really raised awareness among the children and even among their parents and others about what a great community we’ve got here and the importance of our significant history,” said Salimbene.
