DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township engineer Jack Gibson briefed Dennis Township Committee at its meeting Feb. 27 about a construction project to improve two roads, Academy and Chestnut.
“We received a grant for $170,000, which is great, but it doesn’t cover the entire project. However, since we need a Pinelands (Commission) permit which will take about six months, we can cut the project back to fit the funding we have received.”
He then recommended asking for a new grant for next year requesting the balance so that the township can complete the work. He hoped the township would receive the remaining funding for that cycle early 2019.
The state Department of Transportation doesn’t like to leave projects unfinished, Gibson said. There is an obligation for the township to cover the engineering and design portion of the project which work has already been included.
Following that strategy, Gibson believes the municipality would be in good shape to conclude the entire project by next year.
“This is a smart recommendation and I support your thinking,” said Mayor Zeth Matalucci.
In response to committee questioning, Gibson explained that the township would not lose the funding it had received while it was awaiting Pinelands permitting and pending the new request for funding to complete the entire road improvement project.
