DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee met Oct. 6. The first item of business was to commend township resident and longtime volunteer Jerry McManus. Committee member Albert DiCicco noted “Jerry is a stalwart supporter of our Environmental Committee as well as 4-H. He can always be counted on to come through and has maintained the gardens of important township facilities so that they look terrific and he’s really deserving of this leadership honor.”
For his part, McManus replied, “This is a real honor and there’s no better place to live than Dennis.”
Stormy Weather, No Damage
Mayor John Murphy commended the township’s Public Works personnel who had the foresight to travel around Dennis and remove any damaged, dangling or low-hanging branches. “As a result, we had no significant reported damages and only a few power outages; we dodged a real bullet and everything went very well.”
Quick Fix to Dam
DiCicco reported that he received a report of significant water intake in the area of the dam at Ludlam’s Mill Pond Oct. 1 at the height of torrential rains and rising water levels.
He said that he immediately reacted by notifying state authorities as well as the office of Sen. Jeffrey Van Drew (D-1st). “Within an hour, we had state Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Protection on scene with their emergency repair crews. It was really impressive the quick action they put into motion, and a real example of government working, especially for the benefit of a small municipality.”
“Active Shooter” Training
The recent school shooting in Oregon and many others that have gone before have occasioned the need to produce “active shooter” training and share it with school officials, local law enforcement and other interested parties.
“We will be working with an ‘active shooter’ tabletop training exercise with our emergency management personnel to map out a hard strategy. And while we say, ‘It can’t happen here,’ we want to be prepared for anything,” said DiCicco.
Oral History Project
Tom Laughlin of Power of Production Studio reported that he is donating his work on the website of the township’s Historical Museum. Further, his work on the township’s oral history project recording the first participant, Tommy Champion, is done and will soon be available on the museum website.
Best Practices Worksheet
Township Clerk Jacqueline Justice reported that Dennis’ obligation on the Best Practices Worksheet was completed and thus 100 percent payment from the state was authorized.
“For a small municipality we really hold our own and this performance continues to shine well on Dennis,” added Justice.
