DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee met May 17 and made special presentations to the winners of two grade-school contests.
Mayor John Murphy and Committee member Lisa Salimbene recognized Jacqueline Pickering with a special proclamation for her third grade “Living Museum” project on local Revolutionary War hero, John Grace. Grace was “a trusted scout that the British could not buy” in the words of Gen. (at the time) George Washington. His grave is in South Dennis Union Cemetery.
The monument to Grace at the cemetery was dedicated by the school children of the county in the late 1800s and was funded by donations of pennies they collected.
“The students had a great time with this project, had the opportunity to dress up and represent their hero, so we had a lot of Franklins and Washingtons. It was really memorable that Jacqueline chose John Grace who is important to our area,” commented Salimbene.
The second contest was sponsored by the municipal Environmental Commission for fourth-graders at the Dennis Township School. The students could choose to create a poster showing the dangers and problems associated with either of two environmental issues, maintaining clean water or preventing the blight of litter.
Winners were Paige Hearon, first place; Vanessa Fox, second place; Katrina Pease, third place; and Joe Jacquelin, honorable mention.
All winners, in addition to township citations bestowed by Salimbene, received a gift pack of naturally-made jams made from local beach plums from Jalma Farms, owned by Alma George, a member of the Environmental Commission.
Committee unanimously passed, with no public comment, an ordinance which concerns the allowable minimum and maximum compensation rates for some salaried positions, and is related to information provided by the state Department of Personnel.
For example, mayor and committee have as minimum salary $10,200 and the maximum is $13,500. “This ordinance allows us to adjust the ranges of our positions in the township, which were a bit out of whack,” explained Township Clerk Jacqueline Justice. The full list of positions and salary ranges can be seen at her office in the Municipal Building.
Committee passed a resolution which recommends an award from the state Department of Transportation 2015 Municipal Aid Program to reconstruct and realign the intersection of Academy and Fidler Roads (CR 638).
