DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee met Jan. 19 and approved 23 consent agenda items unanimously and with no public comment. These items covered all manner of routine tax, fiscal, and insurance topics and were, as Mayor John Murphy noted, “Typical agenda items that need to be taken care of each year in January.”
Art Projects Showcased
Council member Lisa Salimbene reported on two art projects involving township schools.
One was sponsored by the municipality’s law firm with the winning design to be a Christmas card. The other is the preschool crafting of giant carrots related to a book, “The Enormous Carrot” which are displayed in the lobby of the municipal building. “Some visitors to the Township building don’t have children so I think it’s nice they will be able to see what some of the kids are making at our schools,” said Salimbene.
Safety and Security
Committee member Donald Tozer said that Jan. 27 has been confirmed for “active shooter training” for emergency personnel.
He also said that the State Police in related safety initiatives have requested lockboxes outside schools which they can access in case of an incident and that will contain critical information and items such as maps and keys.
State Police have made areas adjacent to the schools zones of “no stopping or standing” to further those safety initiatives, said Tozer.
Further related to township safety, the Gazette newspaper pledged to inform its carriers not to let papers pile up on residents’ properties. The paper also will publish a telephone number and advertisement informing how to ensure no delivery will be made if they so desire.
Murphy also reported that State Police and Middle Township police cooperated to bring an end to the recent spate of burglaries that had occurred in the township and that the suspects were in custody.
Trash, Leaf Collection
During the public comment portion of the meeting, a resident asked if leaf collection could be improved. “You’re absolutely right, we need to do a better job, each year this problem comes up,” said Murphy.
The resident suggested that perhaps local landscapers could bid on the job since the Public Works Department does not seem able to handle the task of collecting leaves each season.
Murphy said it was a proposal that deserved consideration.
Another resident reported that Waste Management, which handles the trash collection, seems to miss her development on a regular basis. “We get good service from them, so please let us know whenever an incident such as this arises and we’ll take care of it right away,” said Murphy.
Community Support Actions
There will be a free rabies clinic Jan. 30 at the Municipal Building and a blood drive at the Dennis school Feb 17.
