DENNISVILLE – The Herald reported that at its Feb. 13 meeting, Dennis Township Committee passed a resolution to forego $1,500 each of their annual compensation.
The impression given by Mayor Zeth Matalucci then was that the total of $7,500 (five members at $1,500 each) collected was linked to immediately increasing the compensation of township Business Administrator Pat Moran. He started work at the end September 2017.
Moran provided clarification and more background about the resolution, its intent, and timing. Overall, the resolution is to eventually equalize paying Moran for the hours he is putting in against making sure there is no impact on the township budget through increased costs.
“Right now, I am working at a rate of an annual salary of $45,000 and am paid for no more than 24 hours per week, which works out to about $36 per hour. If I go over 24 hours per week, I am not compensated for those extra hours nor is there any mechanism to be paid for those extra hours at a later time.
“If I go under 24 hours per week, I am only paid for the hours I work,” Moran stated.
“We are negotiating a new compensation plan by which I expect that I will be working more hours but my hourly wage will decrease. Overall, though, I expect I will receive total compensation more than what I am getting now. I’m hoping that our negotiations will conclude soon,” explained Moran.
Rather than calling any new compensation funded by all or part of the $7,500 returned by the committee as a “raise,” since he said he’d be working more hours for a lower per hour rate, Moran prefers to think of the situation as an “increase in a line item budget number.”
“I am not a salaried employee, I do not receive any health benefits or sick time at present, and I do not expect that I will ever become a full-time employee,” Moran stated.
“There is a real need for this position. I’m doing the work previously done by committee members and more, and I enjoy working for the township,” concluded Moran.
