DeMarzo vs. Golden: Wildwood Mayor, West Commish Lock Horns Over Letter

By Nancy Rump

WEST WILDWOOD – The gloves are off in the Wildwoods’ smallest town but this time it’s not between current and former elected officials. Wildwood Mayor Gary DeMarzo blasted West Wildwood Commissioner Scott Golden this week calling the commissioner a man of “absolutely no credibility, character or integrity.”
In a letter dated Wed., Dec. 1 to West Wildwood residents and sent to the media, DeMarzo takes Golden to task for comments the commissioner recently made about the pending sale of the borough’s water utility to the City of Wildwood. The mayor did not immediately return a call asking about his motivation to write the letter but in its first paragraph says Golden made “many blatant false statements” about the water utility in a recent “campaign letter.”
“I don’t know if that’s really all this letter is about,” said Golden, reached a day after DeMarzo’s correspondence hit the streets.
He speculated there was more politicking behind DeMarzo’s pen, pointing to an upcoming recall election in the borough. Mayor Herbert “Chuck” Frederick and Commissioner Gerard McNamara square off against former mayor Christopher Fox and Cornelius Maxwell Dec. 7.
“This close to that election it’s as if you’re using another mayor to politic for you,” Golden said.
Golden is also facing a recall election but has been fighting it. He said he still doesn’t know if the appeal of his own recall will be successful. It’s slated for early January.
“I haven’t heard anything but I’m holding out hope it won’t go any further, save the taxpayers some money” he said.
In response to DeMarzo’s letter, Golden drafted his own. He also said that his so-called “campaign letter” that started this war of the words was not campaign related at all.
“I mailed a letter to the residents to inform them of my concerns,” Golden said.
Now he’s adding a DeMarzo-driven consolidation of the borough to that list.
“I’m now more concerned than ever that the intention of Mayor DeMarzo is to consolidate the borough into the city,” Golden wrote.
