AVALON – The Avalon Borough Council had its reorganization meeting July 2. A central aspect of the annual reorganization is the election of a new council president for the ensuing year.
John McCorristin stepped down from that post after serving for the past year. The council selected James Deever for its president.
On a council where most members have long years of service, Deever is a relative newcomer.
Deever first took a seat on council when he was appointed to complete the unexpired term of William Burns Jr. who resigned in December 2016. Deever went on to win his first full four-year term in the 2017 election.
Deever is a local businessman. He and his wife Tracy have two children and have made their home in Avalon for 27 years.
Prior to assuming a seat on council, Deever served the community on the Recreation Advisory Board, the school board, the Historical Society board and as an active member of the Chamber of Commerce.
In brief remarks, Deever said he expects the coming year to be an exciting one in the borough.
He expressed appreciation for the guidance available from Avalon’s “expert mayor,” referring to long-serving Mayor Martin Pagliughi.
Charles Covington, who was absent, was elected vice president of the council, meaning he is most likely to follow Deever as president next year. Covington was first elected to council in 1991 and has served as vice president and president of the council in the past.
Richard Dean was also absent due to health issues which have caused him to absent himself from meetings for the last several months.
Business Administrator Scott Wahl said that Dean is recovering and is soon expected back to council.
