Cape May Court House – Freeholder Ralph E. Bakley announced that eight local non-profit groups received 2011 history regrants totaling $9,670 from the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission. The awards were funded by an operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission.
The groups, their awards and projects include: the Cape May Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 82, $500 for an interpretive sign for their historic building depicting information about the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society, $1,500 to present programs such as “Ned Hector, Revolutionary War Hero” in conjunction with an exhibit from the New Jersey Historic Sites Division of the NJDEP, four lecture series and to continue the restoration of their 18th and 19th century sampler collection; Cape May Film Society, $1,400 to present the film “Why Cape May? A Historical Perspective the First County Settlers”; Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village, $1,700 to hire seamstresses to carry out major repairs, renovation and refurbishing of the historic clothing collection worn by Village interpreters that represent the “Age of Home Spun.
Also, Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum received $2,000 to research, create and produce an exhibit which will combine photography, video and audio; Ocean City Historical Museum, $1,400 to purchase archival storage supplies, proper boxes and storage cabinets which will provide improved work space; Ocean City Lifesaving Museum, $250 for advertising; The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage, $920 to strengthen and expand its educational programming and community outreach.
All regrant applications are reviewed by a three-member panel from outside of the County that recommends award amounts which are then approved by the Culture and Heritage Commission. Commissioners abstain from voting on any award made to a group that they represent.
The Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission, an eight-member volunteer group appointed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders includes Joseph Salvatore, M.D., Chair; Mary Stewart, Vice-Chair; Fred Miller, Secretary; Barbara Beitel; Dr. Janice Lake Betts; Lorraine Hansen; David Rodriguez and Anne Salvatore.
The mission of the Cape May County Division of Culture and Heritage is to promote public interest and participation in local and county arts, history, and culture; and to support the development of the County’s arts, history and cultural organizations.
