WILDWOOD CREST ─ Figuring out “what…to be when it grows up” is the borough’s mission in 2018.
Since creating its new logo and slogan in 2016-17, the borough continues its quest of self-discovery, sharing its findings to the region and beyond. With public input and much discussion, borough commissioners progress with the redevelopment of the New Jersey Avenue Business District.
“This is the resurrection of New Jersey Avenue,” Mayor Don Cabrera said May 10 as borough leaders, county officials, members of the business community, and residents met for a special presentation by Roger Brooks, author, and chief executive officer of Destination Development Inc.
Brooks spent several days in the Wildwoods, giving ideas for revitalizing Wildwood’s downtown district, and urging island municipalities to work together.
Since Brooks’ presentation in May, Crest commissioners have a plan in motion to implement some of Brooks’ ideas before Cape May County’s project to reconstruct New Jersey Avenue.
According to Cabrera, the “downtown” area of the Crest would be from Cresse Avenue to Wisteria Road, designating a commercial district that would coincide with the county’s plan.
Beautification such as benches, perpendicular “blade” signs, and flowers would lend an intimate and welcoming setting for pedestrians. Clearly marked parking areas and signage would increase interest and provide instruction.
Commissioners wish to begin with a four-block area.
Cabrera told the Herald Aug. 9 that in 2019 the borough would implement:
• Flower planters
• Pole banners
• Landscaping
• Street markings and painting
• Roadway signage
• Restroom /trash and recycling cans
• Review of ordinances for signage, parking, and business displays
Current budget constraints will not accommodate the upgrades.
In previous comments, Cabrera said, “Our next steps will be to create short-term and long-term plans to start that work while keeping our community engaged and informed in that process.
“There are things we can do now,” Cabrera said, “with the ultimate goal to be ready for a major change when the county reconstructs New Jersey Avenue. We must all work toward and buy into a vision that grasps current times and addresses the future. If locals will go there so will our vacationers and second homeowners. Open minds will open these doors and help create jobs and stabilize our tax base even more.”
Residents continue to express thoughts and concerns about the upcoming project.
According to Crest officials, the New Jersey Avenue reconstruction project is still “two to three years out.”
