WILDWOOD CREST ─ Residents and commissioners gathered Feb. 8 for the Borough Commission meeting. Questions concerning the official seal and four versions of its logo held preeminence in the commissioners’ discussion as the governing body sought to set a clear course during this year.
Two ordinances went before the commissioners, including the “adoption, enforcement, and authorized uses of the…official seal and other intellectual property.”
Beginning in 2015, the Crest sought to establish a clear and distinctive image for the community and the journey has continued since then. Finch Brands, a design company located in Philadelphia was hired to design a logo and create a slogan for the Crest.
After much deliberation, along with questions and input from residents, four variations of the logo were selected.
While looking over the ordinance, Commissioner Joyce Gould said, “I’ve got a lot of questions on this.” Gould stressed her concerns of having four logos. “I think we only need one,” Gould said.
Gould also stated her belief in retaining the Crest’s location in New Jersey and being connected to the City of Wildwood.
“We should be proud to be part of New Jersey,” Gould added. Having one logo and seal design comprised the scope of her concerns.
Commissioner Don Cabrera recapped the need for a distinctive logo. Cabrera explained that using “The Crest” is appropriate for local usage while “Wildwood Crest” is appropriate for a wider audience.
Mayor Carl Groon concurred with Cabrera and acknowledged Gould’s concerns. Groon asked Solicitor Doreen Corino if the ordinance could be passed while changing the seal. Corino replied that an amendment could be added and pointed out that the ordinance “protects all of them (logos).”
After further discussion, the board agreed to rescind the ordinance and reintroduce it at the next regularly scheduled meeting Feb. 22. Designating a borough seal design while retaining “flexibility” in various logo uses will also be determined.
Lone County Battle
Under resolutions, the board authorized “Partners in Preservation to have a plaque placed at Turtle Gut Inlet commemorating the only battle in the Revolutionary War fought in Cape May County.”
The commission and designated departments will ensure that the plaque is “properly placed.”
During public comment, one resident inquired about the cost of the borough’s new seal and logo. Groon deferred the question to Alicia Belansen, chief financial officer.
According to Belansen, the cost for Finch Brand’s services fell under tourism while each department has its own amount for its own particular use of the logo.
Logo changes apply to police cars, work uniforms, letter-heads, banners, advertising, and more.
United Polling
A change in polling location will also go into effect, according to commissioners. All five voting districts within the Crest will be moved to Crest Pier, for the benefit of staff and residents alike.
Gould approved the idea, saying, “It is a long day” for polling staff and how amenities at the Pier will serve them.
