COURT HOUSE– Freeholder Gerald Thornton reminds residents that two seasonal flu vaccination clinics for seniors who have Medicare Part B insurance will be held at Cape May County Senior Centers this week.
The Cape May County Department of Health will hold two special senior clinics for residents 65 years and older WHO HAVE MEDICARE PART B on October 5th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lower Township Senior Center located at 2612 Bayshore Road in the Villas and on October 7th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Howard Stainton Senior Center at 3304 Bay Avenue in Ocean City.
Two types of flu vaccine will be offered, the standard-dose flu vaccine and the new high-dose flu vaccine. “The high-dose vaccine is the first vaccine developed specifically for seniors,” said Thornton. “Since Cape May County has such a high percentage of seniors, it makes a lot of sense for us to offer this vaccine as part of our flu vaccination program.”
There will be no cost for seniors with Medicare Part B coverage. Only Medicare Part B will be accepted. Residents should bring their Medicare Part B insurance cards with them to the special senior clinics. Other supplemental plans will not be accepted.
Since the FluZone high-dose vaccine will only be offered at these special senior clinics, individuals who don’t have Medicare Part B but want the high-dose vaccine can make a cash payment of $40.
“In these difficult economic times, we will be billing Medicare Part B insurance for the cost of the vaccines at these special senior clinics. There are no co-pays or other costs,” added Thornton.
Seniors without Medicare Part B insurance can receive a free standard-dose flu shot at this clinic, at the drive-through clinic or at other flu clinics offered by the County.
FluZone High-Dose vaccines contain four times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibodies) contained in regular flu shots. The additional antigen is intended to create a stronger immune response (more antibodies) in the person getting the vaccine, which is why it is intended for those over 65 years of age.
Information on the new flu vaccine for seniors can be found at cmchealth.net or on the County’s flu hotline, 463-6581.
