County to Receive Over $1.6 Million for Road and Bridge Projects

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — Cape May County will receive $1,656,100 in County Aid for Fiscal Year 2014 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) for road and bridge projects.
Legislation enacted in June 2012 revised the formula for the distribution of County Aid which resulted in Cape May County receiving an additional $300,800 in funding over Fiscal Year 2013. The new County Aid formula is based upon the last census population number and centerline road mileage for the County. County Engineer Dale Foster said, “The old formula had included a fixed amount plus the County population number and centerline road mileage. The old formula was developed in the 1980’s and favored the urban counties to the north.”
The County anticipates using the County Aid on various road improvement projects. The projects under consideration include Woodbine – Ocean View Road (CR 550) in Woodbine, Hand Avenue (CR 658) in Cape May Court House and Lafayette Street (CR 633) in Cape May City.
The County Aid program is funded through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund which is mainly supported through the state tax on motor fuels. Foster added, “This funding helps reduce the burden on local property taxes to maintain County roads. Unfortunately, improvement needs in Cape May County are much greater.” The County spends more than $10 million on roadway and bridge improvement projects each year.
