COURT HOUSE – APRIL 23: The Cape May County Department of Health reported 21 new active cases of COVID-19. That represents the largest single-day spike in confirmed cases since the first positive test was reported March 18. The county’s total for confirmed cases is now 245.
Woodbine Borough saw the largest increase in cases, moving from one active case and one death yesterday to eight today.
The number of active cases in the county increased from 145 to 166. There was no change to the number of individuals removed from quarantine. No new deaths were reported.
Stone Harbor and Cape May Point remain as the only county municipalities that have not experienced a confirmed case of COVID-19 infection.
Today’s county numbers came as the state announced a jump of 4,227 new cases and 307 new fatalities. State numbers for total cases fell just short of the 100,000 threshold, standing at 99,989.
State health officials pointed to an encouraging sign that hospitalizations across the state decreased for the third consecutive day. A group of 71 hospitals reported 7,240 COVID-19 patients, down from 8,293 April 14. Of those hospitalized 1,990 are either in critical or intensive care.
Today’s one day spike in cases comes as the county’s Business Recovery Task Forces were scheduled to meet again to work on plans for reopening portions of the county’s economy.
