COURT HOUSE – April 28: Today’s report on COVID-19 infections shows that Cape May County health officials removed another 17 individuals from quarantine restrictions, bringing the total to 109. For the first time, the number of individuals who have improved sufficiently to be moved off quarantine equaled more than a third of the cases.
The county’s total COVID-19 related deaths remain at 20, with no additional fatalities reported today.
County officials did report 12 new cases, four each in Wildwood and Dennis Township, along with one each in Avalon, as well as Lower, Middle and Upper townships. The number of active cases decreased by five since yesterday.
The total active cases stand at 185, with 60 of those in six different long-term care facilities across the county. Of the 20 fatalities, 14 have been in long- term care facilities.
In the county, long-term care facility cases and associated deaths are a higher percentage of county-wide totals than is true for state-wide numbers.  These facilities are a significant part of the county’s experience with COVID-19, representing 23% of total positive cases. Throughout the state, long-term care facility cases account for only 15% of total positives.
The new county numbers come on a day when the state reported 402 new fatalities, the largest single-day increase in any report since the start of the outbreak. The state added 2,887 new positive cases. Governor Murphy blamed a lag in weekend reporting for the high Monday totals.
Murphy continued to point to lower rates of hospitalization and the curve of new cases leveling off.
