County Road Improvements Underway in Avalon

By Herald Staff

AVALON — The county has started road improvements on Ocean Drive in Avalon.
According to a release, the resurfacing improvements are being done on County Road No. 619 from 14th to 29th Streets in Avalon. The project is expected to be completed by June 11.
South State, Inc. of Bridgeton is doing the roadway improvement work needed because of the poor condition of the road caused by settled and uneven riding surfaces and the numerous trenches from underground utility construction and service connections.
This approximately $920,000 project consists of removing the top five (5) inches of pavement and replacing it with SuperPave asphalt materials. Also, deteriorated sections of concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveway aprons are being replaced and the traffic signal systems at 21st Street and 25th Street intersections are being upgraded to include pedestrian displays. Upon completion of the paving operations, new long-life pavement stripes will be applied to delineate the centerline.
Most of the work will be performed using shoulder and lane closings, however, during the pavement removal and resurfacing operations traffic will be temporarily detoured to adjacent streets.
The project is funded through the Federal Highway Administration Local-Lead Surface Transportation Program administered by the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization and the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The Cape May County Engineer’s Office designed the project and Churchill, P.C. of Berlin, New Jersey is providing construction oversight.
