COURT HOUSE – May 9: Today, Cape May County reported 15 new cases of COVID-19. It was the fourth consecutive day that the county experienced double-digit new case growth.
The new numbers bring the county’s total since March 18 to 458, of which a little more than half, 230, are active. The number of individuals off quarantine remained 196. No new fatalities mean the death toll among county residents remains 32.
Thirteen of the new cases were located in long-term care facilities in Lower Township. Both Middle and Upper townships saw one new community-based case each.
Across the state, the daily number of new cases and hospitalizations continued to decrease. For the fourth day in a row, the state reported a new case total below 2,000. The number today was 1,759. New deaths associated with COVID-19 were reported as 137, bringing the total loss of life in New Jersey to 9,116.
With today’s increase, Lower Township now accounts for one-third of the total cases the county has reported since the first case March 18. Since the beginning of this week, Lower Township’s long-term care facilities have seen an increase in active cases, moving from 26, reported May 4, to 68 today. These same facilities also experienced four new fatalities this week.
