COURT HOUSE – MAY 3: Cape May County reported 11 new COVID-19 cases today, with eight of the cases in Lower Township.
There were two new cases in Ocean City and one in Dennis Township. There were no new fatalities, and the number of individuals removed from quarantine remained 155. Total cases in the county now stand at 361, 183 of which are active.
In the first three days of May, county cases have increased by 15, with seven of them in the county’s long-term care facilities. The reported fatalities stand at 23 today, an increase of two in May.
The county numbers come as the state enters its second day of open parks and golf courses. Some municipalities have also begun to ease constraints.
Yesterday, Cape May opened its beaches and Promenade to limited use. Stone Harbor will follow suit May 8.
In the state, confirmed cases increased to 126,744, and 120 new deaths left state fatalities at 7,871. Although the number of cases and deaths continues to rise, the rate of that increase has blunted and hospitalizations have turned downward.
Hospitalizations have declined 30% since their peak April 14 and now stand at 5,713.
State testing volume has increased to 246,000 individuals, with a 40% rate of positive results.
Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said the National Guard may be used to aid the state’s 670 licensed long-term care facilities, which have accounted for nearly half of the total fatalities. The Guard may perform routine functions like delivering food trays to relieve staff members.
