County Remembers Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

CREST HAVEN — Over 200 observed Cape May County Law Enforcement Memorial Day, Thur., May 10 outside the county Police Academy. They paid tribute to the county’s six law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
Verna Zimmerman, mother of the late N.J. State Police Trooper Bertram Zimmerman, placed the first of several floral wreaths at the monument naming the fallen officers. He was assigned to Troop “A” Tactical Patrol Unit, and died on Route 83 when his patrol car slid on ice and struck a utility pole while responding to a crime call.
Others remembered were:
• Officer Harry E. Shore, Ocean City Police Department.
• Chief Philip DeSantis, Woodbine Borough Police Department.
• Officer Michael Cullinane Sr., Sea Isle City Police Department.
• Officer David C. Douglass Sr., Lower Township Police Department.
• Officer Eugene Miglio, Wildwood Crest Police Department.
Middle Township Chief of Police Christopher Leusner gave the welcome on behalf of the Cape May County Chief of Police Association.
Rev. John O’Leary, Our Lady of the Angels Church, Court House gave the Invocation and Benediction.
Sen. Jeff VanDrew (D-1st), Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton, Freeholder Kristine Gabor, First Assistant Prosecutor J. David Meyer, on behalf of Prosecutor Robert Taylor, and Sheriff Gary Schaffer, and a representative from U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo’s office all briefly addressed the gathering.
A Roll Call of the Fallen done by six police recruits, members of the 33rd Basic Course for Police Officers from the county Police Academy, who separately marched to the monument, recited the officer’s name, and rendered a salute.
After placement of wreaths, a three-volley salute was rendered by the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Ceremonial Detail and “Taps” was sounded. Joining in the detail was the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department Color Guard.
Kevin Tolan, of North Wildwood Police Department, ended the ceremony with the playing of “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes.
