CREST HAVEN — Law Enforcement Memorial Day, May 10, was marked by observances here and in North Cape May.
At 11 a.m., at the county Public Safety Training Center on Crest Haven Road, police recruits, and members of countywide law enforcement agencies stood side by side to salute six Cape May County officers who died, or were killed in the performance of duty.
They were:
Officer Harry E. Shore, Ocean City Police Department
Chief Philip DeSantis, Woodbine Borough Police Department
Officer Michael Cullinane Sr., Sea Isle City Police Department
Officer David C. Douglass Sr., Lower Township Police Department
Officer Eugene Miglio, Wildwood Crest Police Department
Trooper Bertram Zimmerman, New Jersey State Police, Troop “A” Tactical Patrol Unit
Delivering brief remarks, most directed to recruits who will soon form the “thin blue line” between the public and criminals, were Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel, Freeholder Ralph Sheets, a retired ,28-year Wildwood police chief, who said he was “shot once and stabbed once,” Sheriff Gary Schaffer, First Assistant Prosecutor J. David Meyer, Chief Robert Matteucci, president, Cape May County Chief of Police Association, and Robert Geist, representing U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd).
Wreath presentations were done by Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 7, Policeman’s Benevolent Association (Cape May County and Ocean City) Locals 59 and 61, and the 200 Club.
Rev. Steven Rapposelli of Our Lady of Angels Church, Court House delivered the invocation and Benediction.
Following the playing of “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes by members of the Cape-Atlantic Police and Fire Irish Pipe Brigade, the U.S. Coast Guard Training Ceremonial Detail rendered a salute followed by playing of “Taps.”
At 2 p.m. at Douglass Memorial Park in North Cape May, over 200 bicycle riding officers on the Police Unity Tour to Washington, D.C. conducted a memorial service prior to embarking on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry as they headed to the national law enforcement memorial where officers from around the country gathered to remember those killed in the line of duty.
