By Press Release

COURT HOUSE– Freeholder Ralph E. Bakley, Sr., the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Cape May County Library Commission today cut the ribbon officially opening the newly renovated Upper Cape Branch of the Cape May County Library. Also, the Reading Room at the branch located at 2050 Tuckahoe Road in the Petersburg section of Upper Township was dedicated to Upper Township resident and former Library Commission Chair Mary Dempsey.
Freeholder Bakley said, “Improvements totaling approximately $980,000 were made to this library branch to enhance our patrons’ experience.” Improvements include many energy saving steps such a new gas HVAC system complete with a building management system for monitoring and maintenance and more energy-efficient lighting. Other improvements include new carpeting, ADA compliant bathrooms and entrances as well as a new quiet reading room.
Library Director Deborah Poillon said, “The library, in addition to being much more energy efficient, is now brighter and more appealing for our patrons.” The children’s room has been redecorated with brighter colors, new shelving and rugs making it more kid friendly and a teen area has been created with café seating. Also, patrons will find new collections of video games and also self-contained audio books. New tables, chairs and comfortable seating with laptop areas have been added throughout the library, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
Poillon added, “A Reading Room in the Library is also being dedicated to former Library Commission Chair Mary Dempsey for her dedication to the Cape May County library system.”
Freeholder Bakley concluded, “In these hard times, libraries have become more essential to people as they seek access to free education, research, job training opportunities as well as entertainment. And I am glad that our county is effectively providing these services.”
The Upper Cape Branch Library is one of three library branches recently renovated by the Library Commission. Additionally, two new library branches are being built, one in Sea Isle City and the other in Stone Harbor. The Ribbon Cutting for the Lower Cape Branch will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2010.
