CREST HAVEN – Lauren F. Fogarty, a 2014 Villanova University graduate, was appointed assistant county counsel by freeholders Jan. 27.
The Marmora resident will work with acting County Counsel James Arsenault to oversee legal matters. Her salary will be $55,000 annually, Arsenault said.
Arsenault noted that the office has historically has been staffed by two attorneys. He was assistant county counsel to John Porto, now a Superior Court judge, and Barbara Bakley-Marino. Upon her Dec. 1, 2014 resignation he assumed the duties, and was named acting counsel Dec. 9.
According to the county website, the Office of County Counsel is chief legal counsel to the Board of Chosen Freeholders and to all county departments, institutions, boards and agencies.
County Counsel also serves as the attorney for other elected officials such as the Sheriff, the County Clerk and the Surrogate.
This office also prepares or reviews all contracts and resolutions prior to their adoption by the freeholder board. Other functions include coordination and interface with special counsel for the County — including litigation counsel, environmental counsel, bond counsel and labor counsel.
The office staff consists of an attorney and two legal secretaries.
