CREST HAVEN – A regional bike path system being developed throughout 16 local municipalities in Cape May County was recognized with a “Complete Street Excellence Award” by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The Cape May County Open Space Program, in cooperation with municipal partners, has funded more than 10 projects in the amount of $4.4 million, according to a release.
The expanded and enhanced bike path system will result in 10 miles of new trails and bicycle-related amenities such as bike rest stops, parking lots, “fix-it” stations and signage.
Freeholders and the Open Space Review Board were recognized for their efforts in developing and implementing the bike system designed to make the county’s transportation networks safer and more accessible to bicyclists and pedestrians.
County Planning Director Leslie Gimeno received the award at the “Complete Streets Summit” held recently at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
“These projects will encourage cycling and walking in our communities, and will connect our county and its municipalities to our neighboring counties to the north, as well as to Delaware to the south, via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry,” Gimeno said.
“The county has had tremendous support from our partners in the endeavor.  From our municipal partners who design and implement projects to professionals at South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization and the South Jersey Economic Development District who provide technical support,” added Freeholder Director Will Morey, liaison to the Planning Department.
“It is the spirit of collaboration and coordination that is making the regional bike path system a reality,” Morey added.
