County GOP Ready for March 28 Convention

By Al Campbell

ERMA — Cape May County Republican Committee members are likely preparing to make an airport run today at 5 p.m.
No, they won’t be boarding a jumbo jet bound for exotic places, they’ll be flocking to Naval Air Station Wildwood for the Cape May County Republican Convention. That event is strategically timed to provide candidates for the June primary and November general elections.
The event will be webcast beginning at 6 p.m. at 987thecoast.com, according to party Chair Michael Donohue.
Last year the gala was held at Wildwoods Convention Center. It was the first held under the leadership of County Chairman Michael Donohue and included two voting machines so that committee members could cast their ballots in secret.
Candidates will likely be provided a set time to present their attributes to the membership, who will then cast a vote, if one is needed.
With the retirement of Surrogate W. Robert Hentges, longest serving surrogate in the Garden State, the field could open to as many as four potential title holders. Among them: Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard and Assistant County Counsel James Arsenault.
Freeholder Leonard Desiderio, whose seat is up for election this year, is expected to seek reelection.
Timing of the GOP convention is crucial to the electoral process. According to the County Clerk’s website:
